When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year free agent deal in March, there was some expectation that he would be handed the team's starting quarterback job. However, this all changed at the 2022 NFL Draft.

With the No. 20 overall pick in last month’s draft, the Steelers opted to select former University of Pittsburgh standout Kenny Pickett. The reigning ACC Player of the Year winner was heavily linked with the Steelers in the months leading up to the draft, and from Trubisky’s standpoint, he was far from shocked to see the front office make this move.

“I really wasn't surprised,” Trubisky said during the Steelers' OTAs this week. “We're happy to have him and look forward to working with him.

“I knew coming into the situation, just even coming from here from last year, wherever I was going to go I was going to have to come in compete, earn the trust of my teammates and get back onto the field with hard work and my talent and just being a leader on this team.”

Trubisky further noted that the Steelers did not give him a heads-up before they made the call to draft Pickett in the opening round.

“We didn't have those conversations (about drafting Pickett), but I knew it was a possibility wherever I went next,” Trubisky said.

Both Trubisky and Pickett took part in the Steelers’ OTAs this week. While Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will not base his decision on just who will replace Ben Roethlisberger as the team’s starting quarterback from showings at OTAs, the two passers sure aimed to impress the coaching staff.

The Steelers will return for the continuation of their OTAs offseason workouts schedule on May 31.
