Driver of fatal wrong-way crash on I-45 that killed four people identified

The Dallas County Medical Examiner has released the name of the woman suspected of driving the wrong-way that caused a fatal crash on Interstate 45 in Wilmer late Sunday night.

The name of the driver of the van that was going north in the southbound lanes of I-14 is 33-year old Francisco Granados Fuentes. Police think she is from Dallas.

Fuentes was killed on impact near Wilmer Sunday night. Also killed was her two children, 2-year old Gabriela and one year old Justino.

The driver of the SUV that Fuentes hit has previously been indentified as 28-year old Michael Coyne of Palistine. Two teens that were riding with him and survived the crash. They are still recovering in the hospital.

Police got word of the wrong-way driver a minute or two before the collision.

Ferris Police officer Charles Banks was working a traffic stop when he heard the call. He saw Fuentes speeding the wrong way and did what he could to get her attention.

Once he caught up, the accident had already happened. Officer Banks says Coyne was alive and alert enough to say that he was hurt before losing consciousness.

Wilmer police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol was involved, but it could be weeks before results come back.
