CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The NFL set the roster cut down dates, rules for injured reserve and limits for practice squads Thursday.

According to a league memo published by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the NFL will stagger roster reductions over three dates – each falling on a Tuesday in August – and teams will be permitted to have 16 players on their practice squads.

The first roster reduction from 90 to 85 players will occur August 16. The second reduction from 85 to 85 will be August 23 and the cut to 53 will take place by August 30. The reductions must be completed by 4 p.m.
eastern each day.

During training camp up until the 53-man reduction, waiver requests will expire after 24 hours however they will expire at noon eastern on August 31 for players waived on the 30th.

Practice squads will continue to be 16 players deep in 2022 but this year may include up to six veteran players.

Players who land on PUP/Non-Football Injury/Illness will be eligible to play after four regular season games elapse from the date they are placed on the list. During the preseason up to the roster reduction to 53, those players will count against the roster limit.

After the final reduction to 53, players who remain in the category must be placed on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform, terminated or waived with the designation of Failed Physical or Non-Football Injury/Illness, traded or counted on the active list. Players who remain on PUP or NFI can begin a 21-day practice period or be activated after four regular season games elapse since the player was put on the list.
