A Severn woman was arrested Wednesday after Maryland State police said she caused the death of her 9-month-old son in a crash in Glen Burnie last year.
Troopers said she was drunk at the time of the crash.
Talaya Martin, 30, faces charges of first-degree child abuse resulting in death, negligent vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, two counts of negligent vehicular homicide, second-degree child abuse, neglect of a minor, two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol while transporting a minor, driving with a suspended license and driving on the highway without a license.
Troopers said Martin was driving north on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Route 100 around 4:30 a.m. on April 4, 2021, when she lost control of her Ford Explorer while trying to pass another car. Martin struck the other car, crashed through a guardrail and eventually came to a stop down a ravine after hitting several trees. The driver of the other car, a Honda Crosstour, was not hurt.
Martin's son, Ezekiel Martin, was not secured in a car seat at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Martin was taken to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Martin is currently being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Annapolis.
