Soccer Adds Maryanne Kilgore as Assistant Coach

Former four-year player for the Catamounts now on the sidelines

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Former Western Carolina women's soccer standout Maryanne Kilgore is using her experience with Catamount soccer on the other side of the line as she has taken on the role of assistant coach as announced by head coach Chad Miller

"My time as a WCU student-athlete helped me to realize that I want to be a college soccer coach," Kilgore admitted. "I am extremely excited about this opportunity to learn and give back to the program that I hold very dear to my heart."

As a player, the Jefferson, Georgia native was a four-year starter for the Catamounts, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Education. Kilgore was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at WCU for four years and was the president from 2019-to 2020. She is currently attending graduate school at WCU where she is pursuing her master's degree in Sports Management.

"Nick [Whiting] and I are very excited to have Maryanne join our staff here at WCU," said Miller. "As a coach, it is a real feeling of pride when one of your players pursues getting into the coaching profession. Maryanne was a tremendous ambassador for our program here the past 5 years being a team captain, SAAC President, and a very respected student-athlete."

Kilgore played in 83 games with 75 of them as a starter in her time in Cullowhee. She tallied three goals and three assists in her career and was a part of the 2017 team that was runner-up in the SoCon Tournament Championship.

Kilgore scored the game-winning goal in overtime vs UNC Charlotte in the spring of 2021 which claimed WCU's first win in program history over the 49'ers. Kilgore was team captain for three years and was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team in 2017.

"Being able to say that my first chance and opportunity at becoming a college coach will be for the Catamounts is very special," Kilgore said.

"I do not doubt in my mind that she will be a great coach with her passion, relentless work rate, and compassion for people," Miller added. "We are blessed to have her here and I look forward to the impact she will have on our current players with having walked in their shoes representing the Cats not too long ago."
