Kate Middleton is the epitome of class and grace. And she stayed true to form at the recent premiere of Tom Cruise’s newest movie, Top Gun: Maverick. While at the red-carpet event, Cruise introduced some of his co-stars to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
But while everyone gushed over Kate Middleton’s regal look during the premiere night, royal fans also noticed something unusual. They claimed that Tom Cruise may have broken royal protocol when he held the Duchess of Cambridge’s hand while they were going up the stairs. However, it is what the mom of three did that caught everyone’s attention.
Kate Middleton Accepted Tom Cruise’s Offer To Hold Her Hand
According to Cheat Sheet, Middleton had the best response to Cruise potentially breaking royal protocol. Initially, she allowed the actor to hold her hand and guide her on their way up the stairs. But immediately after the special moment, the future queen consort placed her bag in the hand that Cruise held. This way, the actor could no longer touch her again.
Throughout the years, there has been a slew of speculations when it comes to royal rules and protocols. And rumor has it that members of the royal family cannot be touched by non-royals unless they are the ones that offer their hands. But as it turned out, this rule may only apply to Queen Elizabeth.

Tom Cruise Didn’t Break Royal Protocol By Holding Kate Middleton’s Hand
Royal author Omid Scobie recently clarified that there are no specific rules when it comes to touching a member of the royal family. However, this doesn’t also mean that the public can just grab them or give them a hug every time they see them.
During their royal engagements, the members of the royal family are seen shaking the hands of royal fans. Every now and then, they are also photographed giving their supporters a tight hug.
“It’s more down to what’s acceptable in society or not. I think there are a lot of things that are perceived as royal etiquette or royal protocol that we assume might be the case but aren’t actually,” Scobie said.
The author of Finding Freedom also said that Middleton must have accepted Cruise’s kind gesture at the premiere because the moment called for it. It would’ve reportedly been worse if the Duchess of Cambridge tripped on the stairs because she refused Cruise’s gesture.
Queen Elizabeth And Prince William Have Different Preferences When It Comes To Royal Tradition And Protocol
Years ago, The Atlantic also said that there are no obligatory codes of behavior when a non-royal meets the queen or any member of the royal family. But those that wish to follow tradition may do so. This includes bowing for the men and curtsying for the women.
However, the members of the royal family need to be addressed properly. The queen is referred to as “your majesty” or Her Majesty. But there are times wherein non-royals call her ma’am.
Male royals, on the other hand, are oftentimes referred to as “your royal highness” or sir. However, Prince William reportedly prefers to be called by his first name since he has not yet ascended the throne.
