A high school student was arrested in Texas on Wednesday after police found semi-automatic weapons in his car, a day after the deadly shooting in Uvalde, just 300 miles away, left 21 people dead.

The Richardson police department reported that it had received a call at 11 a.m. on Tuesday regarding a male individual walking toward Berkner high school. The individual was reportedly carrying a rifle, WFAA reported.

"Within minutes of the call being dispatched, numerous police officers from various units within the Richardson police department responded to Berkner high school and initiated a search and investigation into this incident," the police department said.

Berkner and nearby schools were thrown into lockdowns after being notified by officers for nearly 50 minutes, according to letters sent to parents from the schools, WFAA reported.

The student was identified by police after they found him at Berkner high school. While no weapons were on him, further investigation discovered a vehicle he used in a nearby parking lot with what "appeared to be AK-47 style pistol and a replica AR-15 style Orbeez rifle."

The boy was arrested and has been charged with unlawfully carrying weapons in a weapons-free zone, which is a felony in Texas.

The department has not released the suspect's identity because he is a minor.

"The Richardson police department would like to remind the public of the importance to report suspicious activity, as we recognize the vigilant awareness and actions of the person who initially called 911 to alert law enforcement," the department said.
