Manchester City Midfielder Fernandinho Wins Most Powerful Goal Award

Manchester City Midfielder Fernandinho Wins Most Powerful Goal Award

Honestly it seems like we're giving awards out for anything these days, the Premier League's most powerful goal? Do me a favour!

Fernandinho might have thought his Manchester City career couldn't have ended any better than winning the Premier League but he was wrong, because now he has the league's most ridiculous award to go with it!

The Brazilian midfielder is leaving City this summer, after nine years in the north west of England, with five league titles to his name.

He's been absolutely integral to the success of the team under Pep Guardiola, although at 37-years-old his legs did run out of steam a little this campaign.

His most memorable moment this year was probably being absolutely destroyed by Vinicius Junior during the Champions League semi final first leg.

Aside from that though, he did score the fourth goal in a 4-0 win against Leeds United back in April, adding the finishing touches in injury time.

Normally that goal would be largely forgotten in the annals of time, however it has earned Fernandinho the, and this is ridiculous, Oracle Most Powerful Goal, it comes with a trophy and all!

It's the first year the award has been handed out, glad there was a reason I don't remember this ridiculous tat being handed out before.

A statement on the Premier League website explained why the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder won the league, although it didn't explain why such a pointless award is necessary.

"Fernandinho's stoppage-time goal in Manchester City's 4-0 victory at Leeds United claims the inaugural prize," the league's website explained.

"The Man City midfielder's fierce shot was measured to have an average speed of 117.6km/h between the ball leaving his boot to crossing the goalline.

"This was the fastest average speed from all the goals scored from outside the area in the 2021/22 season, without a deflection off another player.

"It was by far the most powerful shot calculated by Oracle, the Premier League's official cloud provider.

"The Brazilian's strike beat the next-most powerful goal, James Ward-Prowse's strike for Southampton at Brighton & Hove Albion, which was measured at 104.7km/h."

It's fair to say that fans are about as apathetic about the award as I am, I mean honestly who cares who hit the most powerful goal of the season?!

As well as being a stonkingly awful thing to need an award for, many people were also shocked to find Fernandinho's goal was the most powerful anyway.

At least he's finally got something to be proud of in his career...
