SHENANDOAH, May 25 — When Mt. View senior Jaden Click hit an RBI-single in the top of the first to put the visitors up 1-0, it would be the last lead the Generals would have during Wednesday’s rescheduled quarterfinal matchup. The Page County Panthers answered back with three runs in the first and two runs in the second en route to an 8-5 win in the first round of the Bull Run District baseball tournament.
PCHS senior Caden Good went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and knocking in one. Fellow seniors Mitchel Gaskins and Hagan Bradley both went 2-for-4 on the day, with one run scored and one RBI between them. The Panthers spread out a total of 10 hits among seven players.
Page added three more runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead heading into the sixth. However, the Generals managed to weave a few hits between a few walks and added three more runs of their own in the top of the sixth. That ended the scoring at 8-5, as Page closed out the game and advanced to the district semifinal on Thursday.
The Generals were lead at the plate by senior Adrian Chaparro-Vann, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Click went 2-for-4 with three RBI, but picked up the loss on the mound as the starting pitcher who lasted into the fifth.
PCHS senior Caleb Knighton got the win on the mound. Through four innings, he allowed one earned run on five hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Panthers played flawless on defense, committing no errors, while the Generals had four errors on the day that lead to three unearned runs. PCHS junior Hayden Plum made an outstanding catch in the outfield in the first inning and then threw out a runner at third base that probably saved a run. Aiden Painter has shifted from second to third base, and the senior made a great stab on a line drive to the “hot box” that saved one or more runs later in the game.
Fourth-seeded Page County (11-10) will now host eighth-seeded East Rockingham (3-17) in a Bull Run District tournament semifinal at 6 p.m. this evening (Thursday, May 26). The Eagles shocked the Bull Run on Wednesday by upsetting top-seeded Madison (14-5) on the road in the second rescheduled quarterfinal.
The second district semifinal this evening will see #2 Strasburg (17-4) host #6 Central of Woodstock (10-11). The Falcons upset #3 Clarke, 9-3, on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round, while Strasburg beat #7 Luray, 8-0.
The Bull Run District tournament championship will be played at the higher seed on Friday, May 27.
The PCHS softball team is also hosting a Bull Run District tournament semifinal
against Central at 5 p.m. today.
