The City of Bluefield announced on Wednesday that applications are currently being accepted for Certified and Probationary Police Officers.Â

Starting pay for Probationary Police Officers is $18.51 an hour, with a competitive benefits package, while Certified Police Officer starting pay is $19.89 per hour. Primary duties will include controlling traffic, patrolling neighborhoods, responding to emergency calls, writing citations, delivering warrants, arresting violators, and submitting incident reports in a timely manner.Â
The current schedule for the City of Bluefield Police Department is 12 hours shifts with 36 hours worked Week 1 and 44 hours worked Week 2, which provides officers with the benefit of a three-day weekend every other week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.)
Required education includes high school graduation or GED equivalent, current driver’s license, as well as attendance and passing of 16 weeks of West Virginia State Police Academy training.Â
Additional qualifications for the position include decision-making, legal compliance, physical fitness, judgment, objectivity, dependability, emotional control, and integrity.
Job duties will see officers frequently sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, operating tools and controls, and occasionally climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and smelling.
Job related travel will primarily be local during the regular business day, although out-of-area travel and overnight travel may be expected from time to time.
