Giancarlo Stanton was initially diagnosed with a right calf strain on Wednesday, the latest in a long line of deflating injury updates from the Yanks in recent days.

But after New York’s 2-0 win over the Orioles, manager Aaron Boone clarified that it’s not a calf issue for Stanton, and provided a more favorable outlook.

“He doesn’t have a calf strain, actually,” Boone said. “He’s just got some ankle inflammation. Feel like we got good news.”

Stanton left Tuesday’s game with what the Yanks called calf tightness, and a calf strain felt ominous considering Stanton suffered the same injury in 2019 and again in 2020 just before the COVID stoppage, and more than a month after that injury, Boone wasn’t definitive in whether Stanton would have been ready to play in games if baseball was being played at the time. So a calf strain would have likely meant a longer absence, but now, Boone is hopeful his slugger will be ready to return right after his 10-day stint.

“Achilles is fine and no strain,” Boone said. “Feel like this is something that’s gonna be short, but feel like we should knock it out and not mess with it and maybe become something else. Hopefully he got out in front of it a little bit and hopefully in the 10 days, he’s back.”
