District Reminds Families About School Safety

In the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, the Kearney School District issued a letter to families reminding them that the district has safety policies in place in case of emergencies or disasters.

“The safety and security of students, staff and visitors is our top priority in Kearney School District, states the letter. “We have rigorous safety protocols that are reviewed regularly and updated as needed.”

One of the main ways the district protects students, faculty and staff is through School Resource Officer Adam Kirkland. Kirkland has a number of duties as Resource Officer such as being the main liaison with local law enforcement agencies and leading training for school staff members.

Another way Kearney School District protects students and staff is with technology and physical barriers. Each school building and administration office has extensive network of security cameras on the premises and school entrances are secured.

The letter goes on to site another safety measure: prevention.

“Our team is prepared to provide support for students and families. This includes making referrals to our network of school counselors, social workers and psychologists,” explains the district letter.

The district also encourages students to support each other through organizations like KIND clubs, as well as reporting issues before they become catastrophes. These issues could be seen or heard in person or on social media.

Emergency and school safety information such as Emergency Response Terms, Text-A-Tip, Safety and Security Committee, and Alice Information can be found on the school district’s website.
