Kentucky summer meal program preparations begin

RICHMOND, Ky. (FOX 56) — As students head off for summer break, the need for meals doesn’t stop. School districts are preparing plans for summer meals to keep students full and healthy all summer long.

Staff from school districts like Madison County will be hard at work all summer long preparing summer meals. Any student can come to enjoy breakfast or lunch at any Madison County School after June 1. School districts will be putting out summer meal schedules in the coming days.

According to food service directors, summer meal participation is expected to be high in response to rising grocery and gas prices. Food service director for the Madison County Schools, Scott Anderson, said it’s always a pleasure to serve students over the summer.

“We’re here to help. Madison County has always been student first, and we want to make sure no child goes hungry in Madison County. We will do everything we can to help. Come to any one of our schools during summer feeding, and we’d be more than happy to give you a meal,” Anderson said.

Madison County is in the process of getting the district’s new food truck ready, which will add another resource for students not only during the summer but through the whole school year.

“We sent that out to be built, and they’re in the process of building that right now. I think the process is coming along really well. We do hope to get it in towards the end of summer, and we hope to roll that out for everybody to see towards the end of summer,” Anderson said.

Summer meal locations can also be found by texting “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304.
