Storms that rolled through Colleton County on Sunday afternoon started a house fire near Walterboro. Lightning from those storms struck a house located on Pynes Community Road. The lightning hit the house near the chimney, which set the entire house on fire. Everyone inside the house safely escaped and ran to a nearby house, where they called 911. “We arrived about nine minutes later and found the fire coming through the roof. There was heavy smoke also coming out,” said Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue. “The lightning blew a hole in the roof and the floor.” The inside of the house suffered heavy damage from smoke and water. However, several rooms of the house were saved, said McRoy.
