Meyersdale's jazz band students prepare for 'Music in the Park!' performance

The Daily American

With the arrival of spring — and family and friends gathering for Memorial Day weekend — the Meyersdale Area High School Jazz Band has planned a special event to set toes tapping and spirits soaring.

Members of the Meyersdale Area High School Jazz Band, including Lydia Renzi and Kyle Petroski, have announced a performance set for Sunday at the gazebo in the center of Meyersdale.

"Music in the Park! The Red Raider Jazz Band" will be offering an afternoon of music and ice cream at the gazebo in the heart of the Maple City at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Katie Howard, MAHS director of bands, said this event is free and open to the public. Ice cream is to be available on a donation basis, and those who attend are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

The Meyersdale Area High School Jazz Band features the talent of 30 students who have dedicated countless hours to their music, attending extra practices and rehearsals throughout the school year.

Band members plan to play a variety of tunes, ranging from Louis Armstrong’s “Struttin with Some Barbecue” to “Feelin’ Good.” Students also plan to perform their own favorite, “Crazy Train.”

“We are excited to be offering this community outreach and hope it adds to everyone’s Memorial Day weekend festivities,” Howard said. “Our students work so hard throughout the year and have not been able to perform much for the community due to the pandemic.

"We are happy to be able to bring some music and ice cream to the heart of the town and hope to see you all there.”
