INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating what led to the deadly shooting of an Indianapolis mother inside her south side apartment.
A report of a person shot came in around 3:15 a.m. from the 3200 block of Laurel Street. That’s less than one mile south of the intersection of Shelby Street and Carson Avenue. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Kendra Berry.
Multiple family friends claim the shooting appears to have been an accident. For their part, police are not confirming that claim, but said the death remains an active investigation.
“We’ll start off by saying there’s a family that had a traumatic morning,” said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.
Foley explained overnight that multiple kids were inside the home at the time of the killing, along with the gun believed to be used in the shooting.
“A gun was located in the same room as the decedent. There were no signs of a disturbance. No sign of forced entry. No indication of foul play,” said Foley.
While Berry’s family friends insist the shooting was a tragic accident, police would not confirm who pulled the trigger, only saying they are not currently searching for any suspects.
“Detectives are confident there is no threat to the community at this time,” said Foley.
In recent years studies by the Gun Violence Archive, a research group that tracks unintentional shootings across the country, shows Indiana has ranked among the worst states for accidental shootings involving children.
IMPD homicide detectives are working on the case, although the death has not been ruled a homicide.
