River City Opera to Return to Live Performances with ‘Sunday Funday’

By David Salazar

River City Opera is returning to live events for the first time in two years.

The company has announced that it will present “Sunday Funday with Riverside Opera” on June 12, 2022 at Bingo Beer Co in Richmond, Virginia.

The showcase will star soprano Vanessa Naghdi, mezzo-soprano Mia Athey, tenor Jonathan Kaufman, and baritone Jake Stamatis as they present songs and arias with an interactive game night twist. Elliott Paige will emcee the event.

“We are thrilled to finally share opera with the Richmond community,” said River City Opera’s General Director Melanie Leinbach, in an official press statement released by the company. “We hope people feel free to come as they are and be who they are, while enjoying the sheer beauty of unamplified voices.”

River City Opera was founded in 2019 by Jessica Harika , Jonathan Heaney, and Melanie Leinbach with the intention of “disrupting the opera status quo and removing barriers between the audience and the performer.” Past events include “Life after the Burn Book,” “No New Mozart,” and “Making Stick,” among others.
