Mountain Lake Park Mayor Don Sincell opens Saturday morning’s court dedication ceremony with a speech detailing the Bosley family’s accomplishments.
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK — The newly refurbished basketball court at Wooddell Park in Mountain Lake Park has officially been named “Bosley Court” as the signage was revealed in Saturday morning’s dedication ceremony.
As Mountain Lake Park Mayor Don Sincell read off each of the impeccable records achieved by the Bosleys, it drove home the point that if one were to attempt to summarize the entire history of Southern Garrett athletics in five minutes, more than half of that time would be spent mentioning the Bosley family.
“It is high time that this entire family be recognized for their own outstanding accomplishments in the realm of athletics and beyond,” Sincell said. “... I honestly do not believe that there is another family in the entire country that has amassed such a truly incredible record in athletics and coaching that the Bosley family has.”
Southern boys basketball head coach Tom Bosley played an instrumental role in providing insight into the court’s renovation. The regulation court has been widened and lengthened; a 10-foot-high chain-link fence surrounds the court; there are new backboards and nets, along with padding for the backboard support poles; and the court now has LED lighting to allow for safe play after dark. The lights will shut off no later than 10 p.m. each day.
“I think of the days when everybody used to play at the Center Street school with a couple floodlights, and now kids today play out at Broadford Elementary with their own floodlights,” said Sincell. “We wanted to add our own lights and make a beautiful court here.”
Much of the funding for the court improvements came from Program Open Space.
Bosley also had a chance to speak to the crowd and thanked everyone in attendance.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled, and I had no idea what was going to be said today,” he said. “All of us (the Bosleys) were raised properly, and that’s what we always tell our players — that’s what it should be all about.
“The motivation I have even today at age 68 is that every time I learn something about the game, I realize there’s something else that I don’t know. I always want to try to learn. I think we’ve all done that.”
With the new court available every day and night thanks to the upgraded facilities and lighting, kids will now have the opportunity to play without having to wait for schools or other indoor facilities to be open.
“Here, kids can play by the day and every day,” said Sincell. “When you look at where a lot of those college-level players come from, they come from those community areas where there’s basketball court just like this and they play all day and all night.”
Brief Summary of the “Bosley Brothers’” Accomplishments
Tom Bosley has won over 400 games with the varsity boys’ basketball program and won over 200 games as a junior varsity baseball coach. He was also chosen to coach the East All-Star team in the 2022 McDonald’s All-America game.
Dave Bosley won two state titles and secured a state runner-up as the head softball coach at Southern — acquiring 201 wins in the process. He was also arguably the best defensive coordinator in the history of Southern football which went 143-60 to go with two state title appearance across a 19-year span.
Jim Bosley’s record with the varsity baseball program will likely never be topped. He registered a record of 386-116 over the course of 26 years. He also made notable contributions as coach of the junior varsity boys basketball, JV football, and freshman football teams.
Danny Bosley was promoted to head coach of the girls varsity basketball program after going 18-0 as head coach of the JV girls’ team. In 10 seasons, the teams went 191-56 to go with a state championship.
Across all the athletic programs at Southern High School (not counting the years Tom spent as an assistant on football), the Bosley Brothers have coached teams to 1,826 victories and 609 losses — a staggering winning percentage of nearly 75 percent.
