Picking up where we left off in the penultimate episode, Chicago P.D.’s Season 9 finale found Intelligence scrambling to bring down Escano, who was going scorched earth on his whole operation.
While Upton would be just fine after that explosion which briefly knocked her out, the same couldn’t be said about the investigation. Escano was still on the run, and Anna feared that he would find her and kill her like he has everyone else who betrayed him. Voight promised to get her into witness protection once she spoke to an assistant district attorney.
Meanwhile, he ordered the team to pull all their evidence to present to ASA Chapman, who said they didn’t have enough for an arrest warrant. That’s when Voight threatened to ruin her career if she didn’t help, and Chapman granted a search warrant instead.
The team searched Escano’s bakery, where Voight and Halstead found him bleeding to death on the floor. With his last breath, he told them Anna had stabbed him, sending Voight into action to save her. He ordered the scene to be locked down — only Intelligence allowed in — and said they were going off the books for this one.
Halstead confronted Voight, reminding the sergeant of their conversation from a few months ago in which he said he would reach out before going off the deep end. Halstead wanted to bring in Anna and claim it was self-defense, but Voight knew that wouldn’t work since she basically fileted Escano.
The rest of Intelligence searched for evidence as normal, unaware that Anna was their main suspect. Meanwhile, Voight tried his best to help cover up Anna’s involvement, even cleaning blood from her stove. Upton then caught him tossing the blood-spattered parts of her car — which was seen on camera at the scene of the crime 20 minutes prior — into the river and refused to cover up another murder.
Voight’s determination to save Anna spurred a private conversation between Halstead and Upton about how to handle this. Upton didn’t want a repeat of the Roy situation, and Halstead assured that he could help Voight get out of this situation the right way. But at what cost?
Ruzek, Burgess and Atwater chased another lead, while Halstead went after Voight. Upton chose to follow her husband, telling him, “Where you go, I go.”
Voight tracked Anna to a gas station and watched as she caused a car accident. Knowing she was about to go down for murder, Anna pointed her gun at Voight while he desperately tried to talk her down. But there was no getting through to her. Hearing the approaching sirens, Anna fired on Voight, forcing Upton and Halstead to open fire on Anna.
Elsewhere, the rest of Intelligence closed in on what may be the biggest drug bust of their careers. They found pounds and pounds of paraphernalia stashed in the basement and celebrated the unexpected victory.
That was juxtaposed against frantic scenes of Voight telling Anna to stay with him while they were both rushed to Chicago Med for treatment. Voight’s injuries were minor, though, and he focused on her survival. But Anna died on the operating table, leaving Voight devastated and holding back tears as he stared at her body.

I missed the last 10-15 min of the show (fell asleep)
Really glad you described it all. I knew they were closing in on Anna, but it was “lights out” for that last 15 min
Thanks!
The finale was subpar. The whole season was subpar. Voight is still being watered down, not nearly enough Trudy, and Hailey with her obnoxious self is still on the show.
.
Anna’s demise was predictable. Of course it had to be Hailey who killed her. She ruins everything she touches.
.
Meanwhile, Keisha, Matt and the rest of you guys have been ignoring the best show on the TV. Catch up with Mayans on the FX channel before the season is over.
Iove Myans. One of my favorites!!
Yes yes and yes and BET’s “The Family Business “.
I loved the show. I just wished Anna could have survived. She was amazing and she had a great connection with Hank. Almost like a father/daughter connection. Now Hank has lost many important people his best friend Al, his son Justin, and now Anna. Plus Erin left and moved away. I feel very sorry for Hank. I loved everything about the finale except then killing Anna off.

I don’t think she died. I think they said she did and Voight is gonna send her into protective custody. I hope so.
I agree with you, I don’t think she died. He would have had to put her in witness protection otherwise she would have gone to prison for killing Escano, what better way then “dying”.
I totally agree!!!
Hysterical about Hailey.
I totally agree
Damn Haley! She’s so righteous when ever someone gets a little dirty, except when it’s for her own narrow ass! But she didn’t feel no remorse for setting Darius Walker up to be murdered, because she felt he didn’t deserve the deal he got!
Hailey deveria ter deixado Anna matar Voight? Pela segunda vez ela salvou a vida de Voight, sem que ele merecesse e ainda é chamada de maldita? Só lamento uma coisa: Anna ter uma péssima pontaria e Hailey não!
I don’t care for Haley! She is too weak and causes too many issues. Her character is annoying.
Hank is being held back and he should be. Hopefully, the days of the rouge vigilante cop will die off on TV and in real life. IF you want Cop Porn of watch HBOs We Own This City.
Anna was one of the best characters on PD. I figured they would kill her off, but I’m still disappointed. There were other twists to the story that could have kept her on the show.
Agree! She had it all and there was a bonding with the unit even from a distance. Great acting!
I agree …smh
Terry Black, Anna wasn’t a main character, since the show began.
She was a “regular” in the amount of time they wanted to just that criminal.
But logically, they wouldn’t spend couple seasons trying to bust one criminal.
So that whole focus had to come to an end somehow
Super duper dumb. They could have let Anna live. Now she just gets to another statistic like her brother and father. The whole shooting Voight thing was stupid. He should have let her meet up at the drop site in thre first place and not dragged her into his car. Dumb dumb dump. Oh and they found the drugs and she doesn’t get her cut of it. A good tv layer could have gotten her out of the Escano murder.
OMG! Why did Hayley kill Anna! What the heck! 😫 Anna did not need to die, Hank was going to be fine Hayley ruins everything!!!!! And that ending 😫
Because Anna had pulled a gun on a cop. She was mentally unstable, her hands were shaking, she didn’t put the gun down when Voight tried to talk her down and eventually pulled the trigger. Who knows what might have happened if they hadn’t shot her. The fact that Anna only hit the shoulder, doesn’t mean she couldn’t have pulled the trigger again, either hitting him or someone else around them. They had no choice once Anna pulled the trigger.
Kate, totally agree
You shoot a cop you get put down. You even point a gun at a cop, you get put down. That is just reality.
especially for brown people.
Truthfully voight needs to get arrested throwing away evidence he going to cause the whole unit there lives and there careers he is wreckless
I couldn’t agree more. I’m starting to dislike Voight. He’s too crooked
At least this episode had minimal Kim & kid time!!!
I agree. That child should have been adopted by her uncle. Kim could have gotten visitation privileges. In real life, if a family member is solvent with no record, he would have gotten custody. Worst stoyline in Chicago PD history.
Not necessarily. I worked in foster care and adoption for forty years and the judges based their decision primarily on what was in the best interests of the child, not on the preferences of a family member who had had minimal interaction with the child up to that time.
I like the Kim and kid storyline. I can do without Hailey though. Sad to see Anna leave, but she got annoying the last two episodes. Not her fault…just crappy writing for the character.
At last! A kindred spirit. I agree; the “Kim and kid” thing–not to mention “pseudo papa”–Is just too overplayed. Not real. Moreover; mom and psuedo-pop are loose cannons….Disobeying direct orders; putting their lives in danger. My two cents: Get counseling. Then marry, and have their own children. The “kid’s” stable; well-to-do (married) uncle should have been awarded custody. Is this some sort of reverse political correctness run amok?? So tiresome. BTW–Voight promised the late Anna ten percent of “Escargot’s” pile of cash. Put it in trust, and give it to her come-of-age orphaned son. (It’s dirty money. Wouldn’t happen.) I wonder if Voight still has that ill gotten cash stash squirreled away in his home? Remember that small fortune? Thick wads of cash. He always gave money to people he felt needed it.
I think when Al got in trouble,, Voight said he put in a trust for his grandson.
When they introduced Anna, I knew she would die for helping out Intelligence. I didn’t expect it to be at the police hands. Killing her off seems like a copout to me (pun intended). Would have been nice to have her story end in a better way. Not sure what they are doing with Voight anymore. How many times can they show him escaping culpability for his actions.
I. Am. A. Puddle. of. Emotions. Best damn episode ever of Chicago PD. Deep down I expected that tragic ending for spiraling Anna but Carmela Zumbado was nothing short of magnificent! And all bow down to the tour de force by the incomparable Jason Beghe. All bow down to the humanity of Hank Voight.
Great finale. Predictable somewhat but it was well done. Amazing performances by beghe and zumbado as Hank and Ana. Broke my heart how she went off the rails, forgetting she was a mother just for revenge. It was understandable but that was so sad to see. Hank holding back tears broke my heart.
What a downer. It turns out the unit did not need Anna to make the bust. Voight should have retired her at the last second and go for Escano himself. He was obsessed and responsible for her death. I don’t see how the series can continue after this debacle.
I really dislike the Hailey character. ever heard of a taser ? first shoot riiight. They should have killed off Hailey and ley Anna live.
I Agree don’ like Hailey…. They should have killed her off and left Anna I liked her character.
I thought it was just me who doesn’t like the Hayley character. She’s a total pain and so over the top on stupid stuff. Hope she either changes or leaves….
Stupid writers. They gave away Antonio,Olinsky,Rojas and now Anna besides several others. No fan consideration, just soap opera bs to divert. Get more members in the unit.
So true. The show lost some very agreeable characters, and left us with a few duds. “No fan consideration.” One-hundred percent agree with you. makes one wonder what these writers are thinking. They should get out of their self pollinating bubble, and expand their creative side.
Great season, great finale, this is PD’s best season yet. Every single episode was good. I hate it that Anna was killed off but we knew it was inevitable. Please give Voight his flowers the dude is an acting beast. My only hope for the future is that they add a new cop to the team. I like Jo from Med if she doesn’t bleed out.
As much as she went through this season, Anna deserved better. Let her take her kid and leave Chicago. Now she’s dead..for what? So Voight can go on a grief bender/revenge arc next season? It was disappointing to watch those last few minutes last night.
And I agree with the other poster they need more Trudy. In fact, I’d love to see the beat cops storylines return. It provided a nice balance to the dark Intelligence stories, and it gives them new squad members down the line.
Great Show. Voight, Upton and Halstead love there characters.
It would have been nice if n b c had a clear clean signal for the chicago pd finale..so they had a voice giving play by play if you will. What a farce!!!! No good to complain to a 3rd rate corp. Itd be nice if they would could show the finale again..WITH A CLEAR CLEAN SIGNAL !!!
So shocked Magnum was cancelled, one of the only shows that my husband and l did faithfully watch every week and just when him and Higgins finally kissed
I despise Hailey. Self-righteous, damaged and just annoying. Please write HER OFF!!!
WHY were there so many commercial breaks in this episode??? Like one every 5 minutes!!! :-(
I confused to why they go to such lengths to blow Haley and Jay up only to have them both miraculously be ok. No way someone gets blown up to the extent Haley was and it back at work any time soon.
Seems like a lost chance to show the relationship between Haley and Jay. We have seen Haley stress over an injured Jay’s hospital bed but not the other way. Could have also been a good opportunity to bring in her family.
For those saying Haley shouldn’t have killed Anna, you clearly don’t know the basics of police. You do not bring a TASER to a gun fight. It was very predictable that they were gonna kill her off.
Those saying Haley and Jay are being obnoxious and self righteous clearly don’t understand they are trying to show they know they did wrong in the past and is doing everything to prevent the cycle from continuing.
I’m surprised by the ending, no big cliff hanger.
Thank you! Everyone either really happy or mad at the ending. The ending was kinda predictable but at the same time I’m just like “what did I just watch??”
I will never understand how they tried to make Hailey become a mini-Voight last season, only to turn around and make her become fearful of crossing the lines this season.
Good riddance, the character was annoying.
I agree
Too bad Anna had to die but by wanting to avenge some family murders from the past she put herself in the crosshairs of a very dangerous life. Someone was going to kill her eventually. Too bad for her son who will grow up without a mother. Anna’s death brings some sort sort of relief for Voight. Not sure how the Police Higher-Ups will handle the Escano and Anna story but Voight did help uncover a massive drug stash and money, this should weigh in favorably for him with his bosses. Anna no longer being around kind of solves a big problem for Voight. Let’s see what next season brings.
When is ruzek and burgess going to get back together like before the kidnapping of there little girl
I really like Chicago p.d. episode I wish I could meet the main character Haley
