On Tuesday at around 5:41 p.m., a Lincoln County deputy responded to the report of an individual burning without a burn permit in the area of Highway 25 and State Farm Rd, south of Sutherland.

Authorities said deputies did see smoke in the area and entered the property.

Deputies made contact with Jeremy Callihan, 46, of North Platte, who was burning insulation off of some copper wire. They advised Callihan that a ban on open burning was in place in the county and left the area.

Authorities said illegal activity is typically associated with burning insulation off of copper wire, so the deputy stayed in the area and investigated further, eventually developing probable cause to secure a search warrant for the property.

Around 11:00 p.m., deputies executed the search warrant and located Callihan. A search of his person produced suspected methamphetamine.

Additionally, deputies found Kelly Dike, 55, of North Platte, now burning the copper wire. He was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

Both were arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests and/or charges may be forthcoming.
