TEMPLE CITY, Calif. (KNX) — Firefighters successfully rescued multiple people trapped inside a collapsed building in Temple City Wednesday.
Officials said that six people were stuck inside the building for an hour after the front wall of a strip mall storefront gave way just after 4 p.m. The building sits in the 9000 block of E Las Tunas Ave., the L.A. County Fire Department reported.
No injuries were reported. Although they initially could not reach the individuals, firefighters communicated with them through the rubble, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
A 50-foot section of the front facade collapsed preventing people from exiting, the Temple Station public information officer told reporters. People in stores nearby said it felt like an earthquake.
Archived map images show the affected building housed a dry cleaner (Sparkle Cleaners) and a hair salon (Out of the Blue). The latter has reportedly been permanently closed. The building is also attached to a youth arts center.
Fire officials said they coordinated a debris removal effort to rescue the civilians, but it's still unclear what caused the building's facade to implode.
