Students at three Nebraska schools will soon enjoy state-of-the-art fitness centers.
Earlier this month, Governor Pete Ricketts and fitness icon Jake (Body by Jake) Steinfeld, chairman of the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils (NFGFC), announced the three Nebraska schools.
The multi-million dollar DON’T QUIT! Campaign named Gothenburg Elementary School in Gothenburg, Johnson County Central Middle School in Cook and Millard North Middle School in Omaha as the state’s most outstanding schools for demonstrating leadership in getting and keeping their students fit.
Gothenburg Elementary School heard about the application process for the $100,000 DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center through one community member and the local organization "The Burg."
"After that, we teamed up to work on the application process, we could submit an essay or a video," said Gothenburg Public Schools Facilities Director Jesse Kincheloe.
The school decided to apply for the fitness center by making a video, and then they uploaded it to YouTube.
“We grabbed some of the coolest kids we have in the school to make a silly video that was pretty well-received,” Kincheloe said.
Through a special Zoom meeting, Steinfeld delivered the great news to the school.
“As we sat there, and he progressed a little further along, and then at the end told us that we won, the room exploded, absolutely exploded, we are really competitive," said Elementary Principal, Angie Richeson.
Currently, the Gothenburg Elementary fitness area lacks machines to work out.
“We feel this is an opportunity for our elementary and junior high students to be able to enjoy being happy and healthier at an earlier age," Richeson said.
"We are so excited to receive a gift like this," Kincheloe said. "We never thought in a million years that we would ever be awarded the grant."
Machines will start getting installed in August, and the ribbon-cutting ceremony is expected to happen in October.
“There will be a little bit of cardio so, ellipticals and treadmills, there will be some weight machines that are multi-functional," said Kincheloe.
This year, the NFGFC will give fitness centers to schools in 40 different states, and they plan to reach all 50 states in the upcoming years.
“It’s an incredible opportunity, and we are super excited to have won," Kincheloe added.
The NFGFC said that all the fitness centers are financed through public/private partnerships with companies like The Coca-Cola Company, Anthem Foundation, Wheels Up and Nike, and they do not rely on taxpayer dollars or state funding.
According to the foundation, their goal is to build a nation of the fittest, healthiest kids in the world.
