Madison County Board of Commissioners deny Adobetown Road petition

In the crowded meeting room in Virginia City the Madison County Board of Commissioners (MCBC), Madison County opened a discussion about the petition to abandon county road #71, Adobetown Road on May 24.

Pete Rossiter of GMA, Mark Davis of Heroes and Horses, and Andy Thomas who led the opposition, were invited to the table. The conversation centered around the possibility of finding a compromise, postponing the vote, or even withdrawing the petition all together. “Law is prescriptive”, Thomas stated. Compromise or not, this petition required a vote. The MCBC denied the petition, however, all stakeholders agreed that they would form a committee to discuss solutions and return to the table. Eli Thompson suggested submitting three separate petitions to deal with the individual sections of the road.

Like previous meetings, attendees were there to defend access to public lands, mine safety and employment and community solutions.  Despite obvious friction and hints of future litigation, compromise and discussion is the next step.  The MCBC requested to follow up within approximately four weeks.
