The medical director of the Marquette County Health Department gave an update Wednesday on the latest surge of COVID-19 infections in the county. Marquette County, along with Delta, Luce, Mackinac, and Chippewa Counties, are listed as high transmission risk areas by the CDC.
Dr. Bob Lorinsor says the surge is fueled by omicron variants, and the numbers that you are seeing are actually very low because many people are testing at home, and those are not part of the statistics. He estimates that the real numbers may be two-to-eight times higher.
But he says the number of severe illnesses and deaths remains low because of the high level of vaccinations, plus natural immunity from people who had prior infections.
