On May 27, the Oumarou Ba twins will do something they never planned or imagined: deliver a speech to their fellow classmates as valedictorian and salutatorian of Central High School in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
It's an impressive accomplishment especially when you consider the siblings weren't even born in this country.
They arrived here in middle school from their native homeland Niger, Africa and had to learn English.
"The main thing that helped was the videos; looking at people speaking it, and later interacting with community members who helped us," explained 18-year-old Imrane Oumarou Ba.
It didn't take long for the twins to find themselves excelling academically, but they never thought they'd wind up where they are now.
"They told my parents we're on top of the class and my mom was like, she was so happy!," said Mounira Oumarou Ba.
Their parents are thrilled their son's 4.5 GPA makes him Central High's valedictorian and their daughter's 4.4 average makes her the salutatorian.
No competition between these two, only tears of joy.
"Because we've done a lot together," Mounira said.
The twins have been involved in ROTC, tennis, and soccer.
Their ability to shine in school and out, helped them earn college scholarships to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
"I'm happy because it's out of state and I've always wanted to experience that," said Mounira.
