Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson is sick to her stomach — not only over America’s “love affair” with guns, but the apparent demand for her hit ABC comedy to address the gun violence epidemic in Season 2.
On Tuesday, 19 children and two adults were killed when a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. (The 18-year-old suspect was also killed.) The tragedy marked the deadliest American school shooting since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary nearly a decade ago.
“Wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write,” Brunson shared on Twitter Wednesday. “People are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they’ve elected and are instead demanding ‘entertainment.’ I can’t ask ‘are y’all ok’ anymore because the answer is ‘no.’
“Please use that energy to ask your elected official to get on Beto time and nothing less,” she pleaded. “I’m begging you…. I don’t want to sound mean, but I want people to understand the flaw in asking for something like this. We’re not okay. This country is rotting our brains. I’m sad about it.”
Brunson first weighed in on the Robb Elementary massacre late Tuesday. “Sick to my stomach tonight over the love affair America has with guns,” she tweeted. “I read about gun violence often. My city and family have been affected by it. Gun violence is a constant, day after day problem. Mass shootings are only part of it. Stop saying nothing can be done. If you vote, demand more from the people you elected to change laws.”
Earlier that night, President Biden addressed the shooting in a primetime address. “We as a nation have to ask when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby,” he exclaimed. “When in God’s name do we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done? I am sick and tired of it. We have to act. Don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage.”
Who the hell wants to watch an episode from a comedy about a school shooting? If you’re that interested in the experience, just watch the news for a few days until we have another one. Disgusting.
100% agree. I’m not sure if they were hoping for a visceral impact on others if they saw something like that happen on a beloved tv show or what, but like you said, watch the news. If they want to get people more involved to make changes, then they need to contact the people we elect to represent us – not through a damned television show.
All I can really think when reading the headline of this article is ‘WTF?’ Doesn’t matter how many times I read it too as the reaction is still the same. How could anyone want something so tasteless?
Abbott Elementary is a delightful show where we can escape and have some laughs. And Quinta is a wonderful person who has done a lot of work behind the scenes to help underfunded schools. I can’t believe people are actually demanding something so messed up and disturbing.
AMEN!!
I totally agree! I watch this show because it’s funny and poignant in regards to schools. Don’t go for histrionics.
no way should they do a school shooting episode. as a tribute or not. it would not be right and in bad taste.
Wtf is wrong with people? “Demanding” a comedy tv series make an episode about a school shooting? I wouldn’t even demand this of a drama series. Go watch the news if you want to see school shootings. How ridiculously absurd.
Thank you!! I am so glad she is not writing this in. I enjoy this show and I find it realistic in a gently amusing way but a school shooting is tragedy and trauma and grief. There’s nothing gentle or comedic about it.
School shooting would be terrible for a comedic episode. If they wanted to skewer the idiocy of these drills like they do for so much else in education, I’d be down for that. These drills do nothing but traumatize kids and in no way prepare for what they’re supposed to prepare for
Not the type of show to do that type of episode. Besides we see way too much of this violence in the news. Why do people want to see more of it in TV shows especially a show that is more comedic in nature. Ridiculous. So heartbreaking this tragic loss of innocent life.
Yuck! No way do I want to watch a show about a shooting! We get enough of that in real life. Sick. I’m with Brunson.
In life we need to escape reality by sitting down for 30 minutes and laugh and not worry about the horrors of the world going on. Is that so much to ask? Whoever is demanding a school shooting episode, is a person who really needs help. They need help with trauma and are looking in for comedys to help process their feelings. Or make stance or do a tribute. But that is not what comedys are for. Those are what your leaders are for.
Good for her! She’s 100% right. I hope her twitter followers heed her advice.
horrendous idea
Thank God. That’s the last thing any of us want to see
I…. I kinda want to know who the hell these people are, because they should honestly be embarrassed. the is a certain type of ignorance some people have. 1. to tell a creative how to do their job
2. to think its in anyway ok to ask for something so asinine
3. to actually have THE GULL to reach out to her…
I would feel so stupid and i hope they do too… the hell is wrong with you.
Quinta is a true talent and an artist with such integrity on top of it. Her sentiments are perfectly phrased, and I look forward to Abbott Elementary’s return with the gracious, lighthearted humor we need right now.
This is NOT the show to do this story. I know comedies sometimes do the harder topics once in a while, but this is not one that should.
Oh for the love of all things holy. I do not want my comedy to have the real life weight of the world. I’m fine with addressing death especially if the actor who portrayed a beloved character passed away but no one should demand we use real life horrors as comedy.
There is nothing funny about these massacres.
I think that’s the sickest thing anyone should ask for!
You people don’t know what you’re saying. Children being shot is apparently comedy gold for some people. Stop whining and stop making noise, the governor of Texas is trying to insert his head back into his ass and trying enjoy his night
Asking for a comedy show to show the destruction of little black bodies by bullet is unfortunately classic Americana
That show how must hatred, and look for rating. Sick thinking.
This show is a comedy in case some of you idiots haven’t noticed!! So why in the world would you put a school shooting on??? Use your head for more than a hat rack.
Watch the news to get your jollies on ALL the crazy shootings going on!!
