A Gaylord man was charged for sexually assaulting a victim under the age of 13, according to Michigan State Police.

On Sunday, troopers were called to Doumas Park, where an officer from the Gaylord Police Department was detaining Damian Malott, 18, of Gaylord, for an alleged sexual assault of a minor that happened outside of the city limits.

The stepfather of the victim had learned of the assault and confronted Malott at the park, according to police. When Malott ran away, the stepfather called 911. Troopers say a Gaylord city police officer arrived and detained Malott, who was then taken to the MSP Gaylord Post and arrested.

Malott was charged on Monday with one count of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim under the age of 13.
