The Primary Elections are now complete, and political parties have selected their candidates for the November General Election.

In some cases, if there were no opposing party candidate or Independent candidate, their particular race would be over, and they would be elected.

An example would be the race for Independence County Judge. There were four candidates in the Republican Primary, no Democratic Party candidate, and no Independent candidate. Most of the candidates in the race had good name recognition, but Kevin Jeffery won without a runoff, garnering 52.24% of the vote. That percentage in a four-person race shows strong support. Batesville Fire Chief Brent Gleghorn ran second with 25.64% of the votes cast. Bryan Anderson finished with 15% of the vote, and Ben Rogers with 7%.

Jeffery is a FutureFuel engineer, and he stressed his management skills in the campaign. Gleghorn was showing support “down the stretch,” and many thought a runoff may happen.

Perhaps the race for State Representative District 40 showed us how a campaign should be executed. The winner, Shad Pearce, featured a campaign that was solid from beginning to end, and managed very well. He used every avenue available to reach out to the voters and received 75% of the vote.

And finally, one of my daughters asked me a few days ago about the Republican Party race for Governor.

She said she was going the next day to early vote for Sarah Huckabee Sanders and was hoping she would win. She asked me how I thought she would do.

I told my daughter that I would be greatly surprised if Sarah received less than 80% of the primary vote.

“You’re kidding!” she said.

“Who is Sarah running against?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” she said.

“I rest my case,” I said.
