SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – The United States Park Police Labor Committee is warning people to stay away from San Francisco's Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Presidio this summer as the areas are "not safe."

In a press release issued Tuesday, the union reported that the agency is suffering an "officer staffing crisis," leaving the city's national parks vulnerable.

"With the Memorial Day holiday weekend here, millions of American families are putting the final touches on their summer vacation plans," said Kenneth Spencer, chairman of the union. "It saddens me to say that those plans should not include visits to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area or the Presidio because, simply put, they are not safe."

According to Spencer, the U.S. Park Police only have 11 officers to patrol the area when they should have 83.

Instead of including San Francisco as a summer vacation destination, Spencer advised that travelers should look east to Yosemite, south to Monterey or north to Point Reyes for a safe and fun getaway. "The risk of danger, and not having law enforcement assistance available to respond, is just too great in San Francisco," he explained.
