Just after midnight, Monroe Police responded to the Swanson Correctional Center for Youth in reference to a disturbance. Sgt Mike Fendall with Monroe PD said a fight broke out among several inmates and they barricaded doors preventing officers from entering.
“At the time of the fight, and the altercation, there was a correctional officer that was inside the dorm and was threatened by at least one if not several of the inmates that if he tried to exit, he was going to be harmed,” said Fendall.
Fendall said with the assistance of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office they were able to gain control of the dorm and seven inmates were taken into custody. Three of the inmates were over the age of 18.
“Jakwon Prince, Datreyveus Manuel, and Michael Pradia. And they were booked at the Ouachita Correctional Center as adults for criminal damage to property, and false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon,” said Fendall.
The four other juveniles remain at the Swanson facility with charges pending.
There were no reports of injuries as a result of the incident, however, Fendall said the youth facility was heavily damaged.
“And approximately $35,000 in damage was caused during the incident by the inmates from damaging doors, windows, televisions, and the sprinkler systems as well,” said Fendall.
