Grey Flannel Auctions is set to finalize the sale of Gretzky's jersey he wore in the 1988 cup-clinching game vs. the Boston Bruins. With an expectation of grossing as much as $1.4M, it would be the highest grossing piece of hockey memorabilia ever. The auction house describes the jersey as 'covered in champagne stains,' as the Oilers celebrated their second consecutive championship & fourth in five years. Famously, that was Gretzky's final game with the Oilers. His infamous trade to the LA Kings going down just months later.
The Great One has a cornucopia of records, so you can just add this one to the list. The former highest grossing piece of hockey memorabilia--Paul Henderson's 1972 Summit Series sweater--sold for $1.275M. The auction closes June 5, so if you're interested in making a bid just hit up Grey Flannel Auction House.
