Classic Family Fortunes on Challenge

Me and mum enjoy watching this on Challenge, but for some reason they kept churning out the same episodes.

There's 545 episodes of the original run to choose from, so why repeat the same ones a few days apart?

They repeat episodes from through the week at the weekends, and I think the morning/lunchtime showings are usually the same as what was on the previous afternoon.

They do it with everything they show - FF, Wheel of Fortune, The Chase, Play Your Cards Right, Bullseye. I watch Challenge quite a lot, it's good to have on in the background, but this aspect is quite annoying. Not to mention the fact they show the same three or four adverts over and over. I feel like I've seen that advert for the jubilee with Kay Burley gurning over Joanna Lumley about a million times.

They were showing Lily Savage's Blankety Blank for a couple of weeks last month and I was really enjoying that, but they only showed a fraction of the episodes and took it off, shame.

Ah right, I see - that makes sense.

Yeah it's a shame there's quite a lot of repeats.

Me and mum watch family fortunes quite a lot too especially at weekends. They haven't shown the Bob Monkhouse years for a while.

No they haven't, it seems to be Les Dennis mainly.

Have Challemge not shown the Bob Monkhouse and Max Bygrave eras of FF before?

I'm old enough to remember Max Bygraves as the host, plus the hideous brown and cream set. :o

Challenge has aired both eras before, Bob was last shown in 2014-15 and latter in the last year. The only two they've haven't aired are Andy Collins and Gino D'Acampo

I wonder if any of the ATV series are still in existence? AFAIK, they've never been shown since original transmission in 1980 & 81.

Would be great to see them again, especially as they've shown the ATV series of Bullseye several times!

I think they have shown some, if not all, of the ATV era episodes at some point but they prefer the Les Dennis episodes as there were so many of them and they were a little more modern.

A fair few editions are missing and only known to exist on an inferior tape format.

I always wonder what happened to the contestants on these old game shows when I watch them. Especially the couples, wondering if they are still together. Anyone else find themselves doing that?. :)

I think part of the charm with the old shows is how we used to get excited seeing someone win a grand or two.

Although it is nothing nowadays, back in the 80's it was still considered a fair amount of money.

There were also limits on the value of prizes that could be given away - this dated from the broadcast of the UK version of Twenty One in 1958 in which a contestant won enough money to buy both a car and a house.[3] In 1960, two years after the scandal in America, the IBA's predecessor (the ITA) imposed a £1,000 cap on the value of prizes that would increase to £2,500 in 1975. From 1983 to 1988, the average for weekly cash awards could not exceed £1,750. However, the maximum prize value could increase to £3,500 as long as the weekly average did not exceed £1,750 with only major prizes valued between £3,500 and £5,500. Cash awards could also increase to as much as £3,500 over four weeks. From 1989 to 1992, no such programme could give away a total of more than £6,000 in prize money and no contestant could win more than £5,000 per week. British versions of popular American quiz shows had to be adjusted - The $64,000 Question having a maximum prize initially of 64,000 sixpences (£1,600) in the late 1950s, and in the early 1990s of just £6,400. "The Six Thousand Four Hundred Pound Question" was only asked every other week so as not to break the regulatory £6,000/week maximum. The Independent Television Commission lifted said limits in 1993.

Yes I do that..... When they have pregnant ladies on I also can't not think about the fact the bumps have been adults for a long time.

Les Dennis was brilliant on this. Sometimes when you see old game shows (yes going back to the 90s, I consider old), the hosts are of-their-time, if I am being polite. Not Les. Sharp, funny, warm and engaging. I get a weird satisfaction when he tells certain muppet contestants to move their hand off the buzzer and to the side, I have to say.

When you batch-watch FF you see the same spot prizes coming up time and again. That "Agatha Christie" hotel (?), his n hers gold watches, fashion vouchers and a video recorder. I think they did match the prize to the person but it's funny to see.

Will they show the one with Max Bygraves where the contestant gives the same stupid answer at the end and gets a load of zeros? I saw a clip on a Bob Mills show and during it they showed what appeared to be his brother saying to the rest of the team what he thought of the performance.

These are likely to be Bob Monkhouse's own home recordings.

    "Turkey"

This must have been one of the funniest [silliest] episodes ever! I can remember watching at the time with my parents and we were crying with laughter. Even after all these years it still cracks me up 🤣 🤣 🤣

Damn, missed them! I've only seen Bob's Central series on Challenge.

Cheers for that! I know there is a time coded episode on YouTube from the first series, allegedly episode 1. Would've loved to seen more!

Yes. I also wonder if those contestants are actually watching the show now, and having a good laugh about it all.
