Family and friends are mourning the death of a veteran New Jersey corrections officer killed in an auto accident last week while he was on duty.

Senior Corrections Officer Daniel Sincavage, 41, of Rio Grande, was traveling in a personal vehicle from one area of Southern State Correctional Facility in Cumberland County to another section of the facility along Route 47 in Maurice River Township when the crash occurred on May 19, according to PBA Local 105 Vice President Michael Gallagher.

Sincavage was driving northbound around 10:45 p.m. when his car veered off the roadway, struck several trees and caught on fire, according to New Jersey State Police.

The officer died of his injuries and his passenger, a 40-year-old fellow corrections officer, suffered minor injuries.

Sincavage began working for the DOC as a corrections officer in March 2002 and was highly regarded throughout his career, Gallagher said.

“He was very loved and respected,” Gallagher said. “He made a positive impact on pretty much every person he met. The one thing that everybody said, he was a giver. He was never a taker. Anybody that needed something, he did for them and never expected anything in return.”

In addition to working as an officer at Southern State for 20 years, Sincavage was a union representative for his colleagues at the prison.

He leaves behind three children. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help with funeral expenses and the effort had raised more than $20,000 as of Wednesday.

His co-workers were devastated by his death, according to Gallagher.

“It’s a tremendous loss,” he said. “Southern State corrections officers down there, that’s a tight-knit community and for them to lose somebody of that caliber, people are broken hearted. They’re left with an empty void because he had that much of an impact on people.”

Funeral services are May 31 in Cape May Court House.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police confirmed Wednesday.
