Thanks to reserve catcher Jose Trevino, the New York Yankees overcame the Baltimore Orioles in extra innings on Tuesday night. Trevino went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a solo home run in the third inning and a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th.
The former Texas Ranger put together a magisterial performance in a game the Yankees desperately needed to win. Thankfully, they managed to snap a three-game losing streak, getting back in the win column and hosting Baltimore for one more game before traveling to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
However, the Yankees didn’t escape without a few more injuries to several starters.
Manager Aaron Boone announced that star infielder DJ LeMahieu was scratched before the game due to left wrist discomfort. Luckily, it doesn’t seem to be anything too serious, as Boone stated he received a cortisone shot.
“Hopefully he’s back, if not [Wednesday], then the next day.”
“Hopefully we dodged something there,” Boone added.
LeMahieu is hitting .250 with three homers and 17 RBIs. His 13.7% strikeout rate is solid, but he’s been getting a bit unlucky the past few days.
“I feel like he’s been a little bit unlucky,” Aaron Boone said before the game, speaking before the announcement LeMahieu had been scratched. “I feel like he’s been making contact, just missed a couple of balls he’s hit to right field. The other day (Sunday), in the doubleheader, I think he smoked a ball that the first baseman made a great play on. Smoked one up the middle the pitcher stabbed and got him. Had a soft liner I felt like was a good approach, the rightfielder comes in and makes (the play). Probably not quite hitting as hard as when he was really in a good groove, but I don’t feel like it’s far off at all.”
Aside from DJ, slugger Giancarlo Stanton left Tuesday’s game with right calf tightness. This is an injury that has plagued him in the past and kept him out for weeks at a time. The team simply can’t afford to be without Stanton for too long, given he’s hitting .285 with 11 HRs and 35 RBIs this season.
This month, Stanton is hitting a phenomenal .301 with seven homers and 22 hits. He also has a 38.8% on base rate and 1.005 OPS.
Without Stanton, the Yankees will be missing a catalyst at the top of the order. Boone will be hoping their star slugger will be able to make a quick return following the discomfort in his calf.
