Kittens are coming, and the SPCA has put out a plea for supplies

Kitten season means a lot of tiny, adorable mouths to feed, and the SPCA of Tompkins County has put out a plea for donations of KMR and canned kitten food. “Please help us get stocked up so we can feed all those hungry bellies so they can grow big and strong and be ready for adoption,” they said on Wednesday morning.

SPCA executive director Jim Bouderau says the summer months give the organization its “largest influx of animals,” with “kitten season” bringing in 450-500 kittens between June and August each year.

That’s a lot of fuzzy faces who need to be fed! “KMR (kitten milk replacer) is our most needed item, followed by canned kitten food,” they add.

The SPCA says people are welcome to donate any brand of kitten food, but they prefer poultry rather than fish or seafood canned food varieties. If you’d like to order online from Amazon, this Fancy Feast canned kitten food is perfect. The Amazon Smile link lets you specify a favorite local non-profit to support with your purchase, for which Amazon sends a small donation at no extra cost to you, and if you specify the SPCA, they benefit that way, too!

If you buy from the SPCA’s Amazon or Chewy wishlist, their shipping address is on file. If you order independently, just ship to SPCA of Tompkins County, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, New York 14850, or drop it off outside their front door.

Anyone who’d like to donate to the SPCA directly can make a secure online gift at spcaonline.com by clicking the “Donate Now” graphic, can mail a check to the SPCA at 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, New York 14850, or call 607-257-1822. The SPCA isn’t open to the public right now except by appointment.
