CINCINNATI (WKRC) - For the first time since 2019, Coney Island will open on Memorial Day weekend.
“We’re really excited to be opening with no issues in the beginning of this year,” Coney Island spokesperson Marley Wallace said. “For all of our guests, it’s going to be a great season.”
One of the highlights of the season will be a world record attempt.
“June 17 through 18 from noon to noon, we’ll be attempting to send the most people down a waterslide in 24 hours,” Wallace said.
Everyone who participates will receive a ticket to return in the 2022 season and a souvenir wristband.
“We’ll be open until midnight that night for all kinds of activities at the park, and then from midnight to 10 a.m., just the Twister waterslides will be open, so everybody can come in for free overnight, and then we’ll reopen the rest of the attractions at 10 a.m. the next day,” Wallace said.
Even if Coney Island doesn’t break the world record, it’ll still be a first in Coney Island history.
“It’s never been done before,” lifeguard Andrew Gasser said. “The park has never been open for 24 hours straight before in our 130 years, so this will be the first for a lot of things.”
Gasser and his sister, Emma, are returning for their second season as Coney Island lifeguards.
“I’ve been coming here since I was three, so this is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Emma said. “I’ve been more than thrilled to be a lifeguard here to give back to all of the people who gave to me growing up.”
When people return to Coney Island this year, there will be a few upgrades.
“We’ve added some new cabanas for our guests this year,” Wallace said. “We’ve also added some new speakers to the park and we painted our Twister waterslide, so when people come in they’ll see some fresh paint.”
Coney Island officially opens to the public on Saturday, May 28.
