A delayed foldable is eventually good, but a rushed foldable is forever bad.

TL;DR
  • The Pixel Fold has reportedly been delayed again.
  • It sounds like the foldable might only launch in 2023.
  • This is the second reported delay for Google’s foldable.

Samsung, HUAWEI, HONOR, OPPO, and vivo have all launched foldable phones in the last couple of years, although most of these brands have restricted their releases to China. Google was expected to join the party last year before rumors suggested the so-called Pixel Fold was delayed.

Now, Korean-based outlet The Elec has claimed that the Pixel Fold has been delayed yet again, citing its own sources. More specifically, the outlet claimed that Google planned to launch the device in Q4 2022 before this second apparent delay.

If confirmed, this means we’d only see a Google-made Pixel foldable in 2023 at the earliest. As for a reason for the supposed delay? Well, The Elec‘s sources said the postponement was likely down to the Pixel Fold “not being as complete as Google wishes.”

There’s a lot that can go wrong with a foldable phone, such as the folding screen being fragile, the hinge not working properly, and a huge crease appearing on the main display when unfolded. So we wouldn’t be surprised if Google is indeed taking more time to get things right. It doesn’t help that foldable phones are also more complex from an internal perspective, often necessitating technology like split batteries or cutbacks to the camera category to fit everything inside.

The outlet reiterated that the foldable was expected to have a 7.57-inch in-folding main screen with ultra-thin glass and a 5.78-inch smartphone display. We’re guessing that a future Pixel Fold would also offer a new Tensor processor, although we wouldn’t hold out for actual fast charging if the Pixel 6 series is anything to go on.
