BET Awards 2022: 5 Past ‘Best Movie’ Winners on Our Rewatch List

These movies definitely deserve a rewatch.

BET Awards’ “Best Movie” is given to the overall best film of the recent season. Over the years, several highly successful projects have taken home the bragging rights, including Lee Daniels’ Precious which earned the award at the BET Awards 2010 and marked Mo’Nique’s first career Oscar win for “Best Supporting Actress.” Some of the winners have made us laugh and cry, and others have invited some of us to think like a man and act like a woman. Ahead of this year’s BET Awards 2022, hosted by actress Taraji P.Henson on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, check out our list of five past “Best Movie” winners on our rewatch list.

  • Precious

Although it is a heavy watch that often time had to display moments of psychical and verbal abuse, it’s hard to look away from the star-studded cast featured in Precious, all of whom gave unforgettable performances, including actresses Gabourey Sidibe, Paula Patton,  Mariah Carey, and veteran comedian and actress Mo’Nique who earned her first Academy Awards for her role as Precious’ abusive mother, Mary in the Lee Daniels-directed drama film. The film took home “Best Movie” at the BET Awards 2010.

  • Straight Outta Compton

    F. Gary Gray’s  2015 biographical musical crime drama film Straight Outta Compton tells the story of the rise and fall of the pioneering gangsta rap group N-ggas With Attitude, otherwise known as NWA, and its members, the late Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Mc Ren, and DJ Yella. The film racked up several award nominations, including “Best Movie” at the BET Awards 2016. We’re rewatching this film for the iconic rap hits.

  • Black Panther

There’s never a wrong time to watch this superhero film and BET Awards 2018 “Best Movie” winner Black Panther. This movie, which featured an ensemble cast including the late Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and more, became a cultural phenomenon and will always be one of our favorite moments from Boseman.

  • BlacKkKlansman

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman follows Colorado Springs’ first Black detective as he sets out to infiltrate and expose the local Ku Klux Klan. The movie stars rising star John David Washington who stars the lead character Stallworth, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Topher Grace.  The film took home  “Best Movie” at the BET Awards 2019.

  • Think Like a Man

This 2012 American romantic comedy features an ensemble cast including his year’s returning show host Taraji P. Henson, Regina Hall, Meagan Good, Kevin Hart, and more, took home “Best Movie” at the BET Awards 2013. The flick is based on Steve Harvey's 2009 book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. This romcom is definitely on our list of movies.
