Heritage Village opening for season May 28

Heritage Village, operated by the Mackinaw Area Historical Society, will be opening for the season on May 28. The village, which is set in the time period of 1880-1917, does not charge admission for anyone who wants to learn the history of the area.

MACKINAW CITY — The Mackinaw Area Historical Society recently announced its Heritage Village, located just west of Mackinaw City, will be opening for the 2022 season on May 28.

The village is one and one-half mile west of downtown Mackinaw City on Central Avenue. Admission into the village is free, but any donations collected help the historical society to sustain the village and continue its programming each year.

Self guided tours with interpretive signs and smart phone audio, trails and village grounds are available during the daylight hours, all year long. All the buildings on the 143-acre facility will will be open with docents from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each Sunday, to help add to the experience of the 1880-1917 timeframe at the village.

"New this year, we will also open Wednesday evenings, from 6-8 p.m. as well," said Angie Morthland of the Mackinaw Area Historical Society. "Returning this year, Mackinaw City Area Arts Council will host jam sessions and choir sessions from 1-4 p.m. alternating Sundays in the pavilion and chapel."

New this year at Heritage Village in Mackinaw City is the Grandmother Moon Drummers, who will be performing at the Medicine Wheel every second and fourth Sunday of the month while the village is open.

Also new this year, Grandmother Moon Drummers will be at Heritage Village the second and fourth Sundays of the month. These ladies will be performing at the Medicine wheel from 1-2:30 p.m. each time.

The Mackinaw Area Historical Society's annual historic festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. on July 30.

"Join us as the village comes alive with demonstrators, music, games, local food vender and docents in each building eager to share our local history with you," said Morthland.

The annual historic festival is a free event that is open to the public.
