Google Photos now getting Real Tone filters for more diverse skin tones

One of the Pixel 6 line‘s standout features was its focus on accurately capturing more diverse skin tones. Google announced at I/O 2022 that it would maintain this focus with so-called Real Tone filters in Google Photos, and we didn’t have to wait long to see them.
The Android Twitter account announced that Real Tone filters are indeed being pushed out now on Google Photos for Android. However, Android Central reports that the new filters are also available via iOS and the web. These new filters are evaluated on the so-called Monk scale, which is a 10 shade scale for skin tones, and means they should work better with more diverse skin tones (particularly darker skins).
The new filters include Clay, Desert, Honey, and Isla, and have a “Made With Real Tone” tag to help you distinguish them from the platform’s other filters.

We can’t see the new filters on Google Photos right now, so you’ll want to join us and sit tight if it’s not available for you just yet either.
Nevertheless, Google has also open-sourced the Monk scale, allowing third parties to use it for their products. So hopefully we see other photo apps and services offering more representative imaging results.
