District 29 candidates Jamie Grant and Mark Gidley say race is too close to call

Local minister Mark Gidley and Etowah County Commissioner Jamie Grant. Both seek the Republican nomination for the Alabama House of Representatives District 29 seat in Tuesday's Republican primary.

Neither candidate was ready to claim victory in the race for House of Representatives District 29.

Jamie Grant and Mark Gidley both said late Tuesday that the race was just to close to call, given provisional ballots cast.

The district is split between Etowah and Calhoun County; Grant led the race in Etowah County, while Gidley led in Calhoun County.

Separated by a margin of 82 votes — 4,006 for Gidley, 3,924 for Grant — neither felt the race was over.

Grant said he did not expect to know the outcome before Wednesday; Gidley said it might be next Tuesday, after provisional ballots are counted.

Etowah County Probate Judge/Elections Manager Scott Hassell said there were less than 200 provisional ballots cast county-wide.

In Etowah County, Grant received 51.33% of the vote — 2,516 votes, while Gidley received 2,386 votes.

In Calhoun County, Gidley received 1,620 votes to Grant's 1,408.
