6 weekend events in Houma, Thibodaux include White Boot Stroll, Memorial Day tributes

Local events this Memorial Day weekend celebrate the area's art, culture and music and pay tribute to those who died at war.

Here are 6 things you can do this weekend in Terrebonne and Lafourche:

White Boot Stroll

Houma's second annual White Boot Stroll is scheduled Saturday, but you can get a head start Friday with a free concert featuring several bands near the Courthouse Square.

The second annual White Boot Stroll is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. It showcases historic Downtown Houma and celebrates the best of Terrebonne Parish's arts and culture. Businesses will be paired with local artists and musicians, and streets will be blocked off to allow pedestrians to easily explore shops and restaurants.

New this year, a concert featuring several bands will kick off the festivities from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. near the Courthouse Square, Main and Church streets.

The event is hosted by the Bayou Regional Arts Council, Houma Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and Houma Downtown Development Corp.

Thibodaux memorial observance

A service in advance of Memorial Day is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Raymond Stafford Post 513 in Thibodaux. 

The observance will honor American military veterans who died at war as well as American Legion post members and their families who have passed away.

After the memorial service, the post, at 1250 Narrow St., will celebrate its 75th anniversary. The post is named after the first Black veteran of Lafourche Parish who was killed during World War II. 

St. Jude Ride to Provide

A motorcycle ride and fair to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is scheduled all day Saturday at Zydeco Harley-Davidson, 1740 Martin Luther King Blvd., Houma.

The event includes a silent auction, a raffle and food. 

Signup for the ride starts at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $20 per bike, $5 per additional rider. Jeeps and hot rods are welcome at $25 each.

Outdoor yoga

Root2Rise yoga studio in Houma kicks off a three-part outdoor yoga series from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the Bayou Country Sports Park, 4374 La. 311, weather permitting. 

The group will meet near the park's Valhi Boulevard entrance.

Other sessions are scheduled June 18 at the Downtown Marina and July 30 at Maple Avenue Park.

Homeless veterans benefit

A fundraiser to help local homeless veterans is scheduled for Saturday at the On the Canal Bar, 1109 Dunn St. Houma.

It's sponsored by After the Mission, a local nonprofit. 

Live music includes DJ Dr. Souss from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and DJ Trashy Spins from 9:30 p.m. 'til. DJ Rhett will lead a live auction from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Tickets, $30 in advance or $40 at the door, are available at Powerhouse Gym, 6803 W. Park Ave, and the On the Canal Bar.

Memorial Day in Houma

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Honor Guard raises the flag during 2019's Memorial Day ceremony at the Regional Military Museum in Houma.

The Regional Military Museum, 1154 Barrow St. in Houma, will host its annual Memorial Day ceremony from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

It will begin with a flag raising by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Honor Guard, followed by a speech by Sherriff Tim Soignet, a Marine Corps veteran. Hamburgers will be served following the ceremony.

Admission is free.
