It’s one down and one to go for Danville High School’s Future Problem Solvers students. Their chosen mission this school year was to do something special for Veterans, and last weekend they dedicated the new garden for Mercy Housing at Cannon Place out by the VA Illiana Health Care campus. This coming Memorial Day Monday at 9:30 AM, they’ll be dedicating the garden they’ve been working on at American Legion Post 210, at Prospect Place and Jackson.
DHS Social Studies teacher Lori Woods is the faculty advisor; and her team was named the best prep Future Problem Solvers team in Illinois for their work this year. Sophomore student Ethan Fox is in his first year at Future Problem Solvers. He says what happened at the VA campus was especially rewarding.
AUDIO: It’s great what we’ve been doing. We’ve been helping out so many people, especially at the VA campus. It was just sad there. When we went there, they barely had any food in their storage, and they really just needed out help. And I’m glad we could help them.
Mauro Bautista joined Future Problem Solvers as a freshman.
AUDIO: I heard from Ethan; he was talking about how we were helping Veterans. I didn’t have someone in my family who is a Veteran, but I wanted to help out with all that stuff. That’s what drew me in to Future Problem Solvers and this project.
Katherine Kittell says meeting Lori Woods was a big reason she joined the team.
AUDIO: Well Miss Woods was my teacher when I was a sophomore, and so she introduced me to everything. And then I saw all the good things that all the kids were doing that were in FPS, so.
And next up after Monday’s dedication, preparations for a trip to Massachusetts for worldwide Future Problem Solvers competition, comparing their project to other teams from other schools.
