Frank Gay has been coaching football in some capacity for 33 years, but his latest term at Red Land High School has come to an end.

Gay resigned as head football coach last week, closing his second stint at the West Shore School District program after four seasons.

Gay admitted Monday that the rigors of the job produced more pitfalls and frustration with each passing season.

“The overall process of attempting to change things here was difficult. I thought I could be the guy to do it. I really did,” Gay said. The Patriots went 2-8 last season.

“There were a lot of reasons why I came to the decision. I spoke with my family and some close friends and came to the decision. I didn’t want the really good kids who wanted to be here and do the right things see that frustration.”

Gay brought his typical dedication and enthusiasm back to Red Land in 2018 when he replaced former coach Chad Weaver.

He also served as head coach for the Patriots from 2003-10, where he compiled a 45-43 mark before taking over at Camp Hill.

Gay led the Lions to consecutive District 3 titles (2014-15) and was 44-25 overall in six seasons. A longtime educator in the West Shore SD, Gay resigned as Camp Hill’s head coach prior to the 2017 season.

He did not rule out a return to coaching, perhaps as an assistant, in the future.
