Now, the man responsible, Anthony Martezz Randall, 50, of Seaside, has been convicted of first-degree murder by a jury, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

On September 21, 1995, Perkins, who went by the nickname "LJ," was found shot to death on Amador Avenue.

Randall had previously dated a woman that Perkins had a child with. A week before the killing, Randall had reportedly forced his way into the woman's house and beat her, then attempted to rob Perkins at gunpoint.

The trial revealed that on the night of the murder, Randall had fought over the phone with the woman before deciding to go to an apartment where the couple had been visiting friends. He disabled their car, and hid until they came outside.

Then, he ambushed, killed and robbed Perkins.

The investigation went cold, until last year when the case was reopened and new witnesses came forward tying Randall to the crime. In the trial, three people testified that Randall had admitted to the murder.

Randall was convicted, with an added enhancement that he personally used a firearm in the commission of the crime.

And, because Randall had a prior serious and violent felony conviction for assault with a firearm from 1990, his crimes fall within the Three Strikes Law, which means that he's eligible to receive twice the prison term than usual for the crime, according to the California Courts website.

Randall will be sentenced on June 21. He faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison plus 15 years.
