Stop the presses: Bella Hadid has landed in Cannes! The supermodel touched down in France today to attend the film festival’s screening of The Innocent (L’Innocent). No stranger to delivering a stellar red carpet moment at the Croisette, Hadid chose a vintage design from the 1980s that embraced the decade’s extravagance. Don’t worry though—huge shoulder pads this was not.

In a timeless look styled by Law Roach, Hadid wore a strapless black Versace gown that was complete with peplum waistline and hefty back bow. The design was originally made by Gianni Versace back in 1987 for a Teatro alla Scala production of the opera Salome. It certainly falls in line with the puffed silhouettes that dominated the era. As Vogue’s resident archive expert Laird Borrelli-Persson put it a few years back, the shoulders had linebacker proportions and the skirts were ballooned into poufs.

Hadid’s retro shape is right in line with fashion’s mood right now. Labels like Batsheva, Rodarte, and Carolina Herrera have all been embracing big, extravagant silhouettes this season, as have stars like Kate Middleton, Natalia Dyer, and Yseult. To give her gown a more dazzling finish, Hadid accessorized with dazzling jewels by Chopard—a Cannes must.
