Try not to sob through Audra McDonald and Kelli O'Hara's version of 'Lily's Eyes' from The Secret Garden

Two theater legends gender-bend a classic ballad.

There are perhaps few songs in the musical theater canon as perfectly pitched to tear at your heartstrings like "Lily's Eyes" from The Secret Garden.

In the 1991 musical, based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Archibald Craven and his unscrupulous brother, Neville, sing this duet, mourning their lost love, Lily. But if you thought it couldn't get any more emotional, you'd be wrong.

Because at this year's annual Miscast performance, two vocal powerhouses — Kelli O'Hara and Audra McDonald — took on the song (that's 16 Tony nominations and 7 wins singing one number).

The two women are Broadway legends and capable of infusing a song with incredible emotion, so it's almost unfair to watch them sing "Lily's Eyes," as they do in this exclusive clip. Grab some tissues before watching, trust us.

Miscast is an annual theater event that invites Broadway performers to tackle songs performed by characters that they would not normally be cast as, which largely leads to a lot of gender-bending takes as McDonald and O'Hara do here.

The profits from Miscast support the work of MCC Theater, as they produce new Off-Broadway work and run a Youth Company and in-school partnerships across New York City.

In addition to McDonald and O'Hara's song, this year's Miscast22 featured performances from Uzo Aduba, Shoshana Bean, Raul Esparza, Andrea Martin, Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and more.

For those that were not able to see Miscast22 in person on April 4, MCC Theater produced a streaming broadcast, which is available to watch on Broadway Unlocked through May 28.
