Boomer says it would be 'weak' of Yankees to let Josh Donaldson affect clubhouse chemistry

The Yankees have lost three straight games since the Josh Donaldson/Tim Anderson feud, and Boomer and Gio had to raise the question of whether the polarizing Donaldson could create a rift in the clubhouse and disrupt what has been a dominant season so far.

“They have this Josh Donaldson distraction, and they’ve lost three in a row. You just never know,” Boomer said during Tuesday’s show. “The end of the day, you just hope it doesn’t tear this team apart. I don’t think it will, but you hope it doesn’t create what we all would hate to happen to our own teams, that’s a schism between the players.”

Boomer says if that happens, then it’s on the Yankees, and not Donaldson, for allowing something like his “Hey Jackie” comments to Anderson ruin what has led to the league’s best record a quarter of the way through the season.

“Hopefully they’re able to put it in the past and don’t worry about it,” Boomer said. “If the Yankee players allow the White Sox players in their locker room to determine the way they’re gonna react to something…that’s weak. This is your teammate. Your teammate is out there trying to win games with you guys. Maybe he’s bringing the edge to the corporate Yankees. Maybe that’s what this is, and they don’t like it. I don’t know.”

Gio certainly doesn’t think it will cause any discord in the clubhouse, and that Yankees fans shouldn’t be too concerned.

“I can’t think that this is going to create some sort of fracture in the clubhouse,” Gio said. “I couldn’t imagine.

“We haven’t heard that. If anything, we’ve heard the opposite, about how he’s provided an element to this team as far as a grittiness and an edge and a different personality to this group that the Yankees haven’t had in a couple of years.”
