Boston foods company to build new plant in NC, create more than 200 jobs

RALEIGH – Hans Kissle Company, a manufacturer of prepared foods based in Boston, is making a play to become a nation-wide provider and a new facility in North Carolina is part of that plan.

North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee voted on Tuesday to award Hans Kissle a Job Development Investment Grant worth some $2 million if the firm builds a new facility in Gastonia and creates some 219 jobs over the next four years. The grant would be a rebate on a percentage of state income taxes withheld from employees.

“We are excited to be able to expand production to meet the growing demand for our premium products from consumers and retail partners in the Southeast,” said Scott Moffitt, CEO of Hans Kissle Company, in a statement. “Gastonia is a thriving community with a talented workforce, and we are proud to put down roots and call it home for our new facility. We look forward to bringing great jobs to the community and being a positive contributor in many ways.”

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper later announced the decision.

“North Carolina’s agricultural and manufacturing legacy continues to attract growing companies to counties like Gaston,” said Cooper. “Our skilled workforce and great quality of life are key ingredients for our thriving manufacturing industry.”

Minimum pay will be around $42,000, according to the agreement disclosed during a conference call.

Kissle has one plant in Boston and will invest some $42 million in the Gastonia facility, according to the EIC agreement.

Local incentives total some $3.5 million.

North Carolina was selected over locations in Virginia and South Carolina, the N.C. Department of Commerce noted.
