Buck Showalter turned 66 years old on Monday, and while his favorite birthday gift was likely a blowout Mets win in San Francisco, his players and fellow coaches still made sure to celebrate before the team’s 13-3 rout.
The pregame party in the visiting clubhouse included a piñata, sweets, and some playful jabs at Showalter’s age.
“Fortunately, they didn’t blindfold me,” Showalter said about the piñata. “The spin-around was tough, especially after being in Coors Field for three days. I was spinning there the whole time.”
Showalter’s clubhouse birthday party also included something he had never seen before since taking the job: chocolate.
“It was the only chocolate we’ve seen since I’ve been with the Mets,” Showalter laughed.
The team also had a figuring of an “old man” placed on top of Showalter’s birthday cake, which Showalter later realized was supposed to represent him.
“They had some old guy on top of the cake, I didn’t know who that was supposed to be,” Showalter said. “Then I figured out it was me.
“It was cool. It was very much appreciated.”
